Mr. Wayne Helmly

Wayne Helmly has served as a teacher, collaborative pianist, and  an Episcopal Church organist/choirmaster for over twenty years. He has been honored to serve on the DuBose faculty for thirteen years.  In 2007 and again in 2009 he one of five Dorchester Two District Honor Teachers and was a finalist for District Teacher of the Year. He was the founding director of ACES, an after-school academic assistance program funded by a United Way grant that he co-authored. He also wrote three Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) grants that were fully funded.

Mr. Helmly’s purpose is to serve students, helping them to know that they are valuable and worthy JUST BECAUSE THEY BREATHE. He uses the piano and self-expression as his means of doing that. He strives to make piano study relevant to real life, maintains high expectations for his students, and highly values and honors the diversity that he enjoys seeing in his students.

Before teaching piano full-time, Mr. Helmly also taught chorus at DMS. His last year teaching chorus the DMS treble chorus earned the third highest score at the SCMEA Choral Festival.

Eventually the piano and chorus programs grew large enough to warrant full-time positions. He chose piano and loves teaching it all day! Every year his students earn superior and Excellent ratings at the SCMEA Piano Festival.

He is also the Organist-Choirmaster at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. St. Stephen’s, “The First Free Church in America,”  is known throughout the city for its           commitment to social justice, and the choir figures prominently in that vision. Recently he composed a widely acclaimed Blues Evensong in honor of the visit of The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, (yes, the one who preached at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex).

He has served as pianist for such notable artists as Muriel Costa-Greenspon, Robert Shaw, John Rutter, Paula Robison, and Sandra Willetts. He has also served as a master class pianist for Midori, William Fred Scott, Lindsay Christiansen, Hal Hopson, among others.

He is married to Joey, the love of his life, which is his highest honor and privilege.
