• Temporary Virtual Learning: Sept. 7-15

Posted by Jennifer Passmore on 9/3/2021

Dorchester District Two adopts a plan to move to a 7 day temporary virtual learning model

With the growing number of COVID-related situations in our schools and the community, Dorchester District Two school operations are increasingly being impacted. The primary concern is for the health and safety of our students and staff. But also, the increased number of positive and quarantined employees has presented a challenge to safely and adequately staff positions critical to school operations.

Therefore, the Dorchester School District Two School Board has adopted a plan to move to a district-wide temporary virtual learning model beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7th through Wednesday, Sept. 15th with classes resuming Thursday, Sept. 16th. Extracurricular activities, including athletic events and practices as well as extended day will also be suspended to protect the health of students and staff. This will allow a pause to enable many of the students and staff currently out of school due to COVID situations to safely return. In addition, deep cleaning will be performed in schools and on buses, and additional mitigation measures will be implemented.

Your child’s school will provide important information on the daily instructional schedule and expectations for students during the temporary virtual learning period.

Adjusted 2021-2022 Bell Schedule to begin on September 16th
The School Board also approved an adjustment to the current bell schedule for start and ending times for the school day to help with bus schedules and to allow cleaning of buses between routes. The schedule will be as follows:
    • elementary: 7:15 am to 2:00 pm
    • middle schools: 8:30 am-3:00 pm
    • high schools, Givhans and Rollings Middle School of the Arts 9:30 am-4:00 pm
This schedule will begin on Sept.16th when students return, and will be followed for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year.

  • Update on Face Covering Policy ADD

Posted by Jennifer Passmore on 5/27/2021

At the May 24th meeting of the Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees, revised Board Policy ADD: Face Coverings was on the agenda for second reading having passed the first reading at the May 10th meeting. The original Policy ADD was adopted by the School Board in August 2020. The major revision of this policy is an update to the use of face coverings connected to student outdoor activities.

In accordance with the Governor McMaster’s Executive Order 2021-23 issued on May 11th, the school district immediately implemented the mandated directive to allow the parent/guardian of a student to complete a consent waiver (standardized form created and distributed by DHEC) to opt out of any face covering requirement imposed by school districts. This directive to offer opt out waivers for wearing of face coverings does not apply to adults in schools. In addition, it does not apply to the wearing of face coverings on school buses as that is a federal directive.

At this meeting, the School Board determined that at this time it was in the best interest of students and school operations to refer the revised Policy ADD back to the Board Policy Committee for a thorough review for future circumstances. Therefore, the current Policy ADD would be in effect as adopted in August 2020 for those students whose families have not completed the waiver to opt out of face covering requirements.
