M.ED Intellectual Disabilities

Mrs. Sherri Morris

My name is Mrs. Morris.  I have been teaching special education since 1981. I teach a  self-contained class of students with Intellectual Disabilities. My teaching philosophy follows two quotes from an unknown source. “You cannot help people permanently but doing what they could and should do for themselves”. “Our job is not to help students do well in school. Our job is to help them in life”.

  • Our classroom will use a clip chart to monitor behavior.  A Clip Chart is a great tool that allows students to be rewarded for positive behavior. Each student has a clothespin with his or her name on it. The students love to see their clips move up the chart.  Everyone will start on green at the beginning of each day and clips can be moved up and down throughout the day based on behavior. Each time the clip is moved down, the students will be removed to a thinking spot for 5 minutes.   At the beginning of each month the student will set a behavior goal. This goal will be checked each week to keep their goal on target. A reward will be given to the students that meet their weekly goal.

A folder will be sent home each day and the color chart will be marked that the student achieved each day.   Remember we start on green each day and the goal is to get off the green and ultimately reach Pink and Purple. Please sign their folder chart daily and give a high five with your child when they meet their goal.  IF your child is green or below then you will need to talk with your child about making good choices.

  • Your child will have a communication folder.  This will be our tool to communicate with each other on a daily basis.  A simple checklist of behaviors will be sent home daily.  PLEASE do not take these out of the folder.  I need for you to praise good behavior at home and to initial the checklist nightly.

Please send me a note in your child’s communication folder if you have any concerns.  I will be certain to see the note when I check his/her folder each day.  Your child will be responsible for delivering his folder on my desk each day.  I will not go in their book bags and search for items daily.  Hopefully, you will practice this routine at home too.

If you are interested in a conference, please call me at school (843-871-3230), or send me a note in your child’s folder. You can also send an email to me at smorris@dorchester2.k12.sc.us.   I will be glad to talk with you about your child’s progress or any concerns that you may have.

Each week I will send home a newsletter.  This newsletter is to let you know the activities and happenings in our classroom.
