Ms. Barnes
I have been teaching at the Fort for three years now, but teaching was not my first career path. Before I changed my major to English Edication, I was going to vet school at NC State and working in shelter medicine, which I had been doing since I was 13 first as a volunteer then as a paid employee when I turned 18. When I switched career paths, I started working in holisitic pet care nutrition - I still work there.
I decided to change my career when I realized that was not what I meant to do with my life, beacuse my true passion was teaching. So, I left Raleigh and moved back to Charleston. I graduated from CSU with my BA in English Education. I graduated with honors and an active member of Sigma Tau Delta, an English Honors Society - I still find the time to present in both their regional and international conferences. I also have accredidations for teaching gifted and talented students through Converse College and NIMSI.
My husband's name is Kris and we have a 6 year old son, Wyatt. Together we have 8 pets: 5 cats, 2 dogs, and 1 tortoise. We could almost run a small, low budget petting zoo.
Most of my hobbies are cliché for English teachers—I like reading and writing. Big shock there. But my best friend and I have a fondness for hiking with our dogs, even when I get us lost for four hours on a mountain. Hiking is also popular with my son, but typically we are looking for bugs, rocks, and reptiles. Thankfully he knows not to touch the venemous ones.
