• Dorchester School District Two statement on Legislative Proviso 1.108 on Face Coverings

Posted by Jennifer Passmore on 7/13/2021

In accordance with the state budget Proviso 1.108 recently passed by the South Carolina Legislature and effective immediately, Dorchester School District Two will no longer require that face coverings be worn by students or staff on district property or school buses. The wearing of face coverings by students and staff within district facilities and on school buses remains a recommendation of state and federal health officials and is strongly encouraged by the school district.

The Board of Trustees will be reviewing and modifying current Board Policy ADD on Face Coverings to be in compliance with Proviso 1.108. All district health and safety measures related to COVID-19 will be updated, and will be incorporated in the district’s reopening of school plans for 2021-2022. These plans will be posted on the district web site following upcoming public input meetings.

  • Update on Face Covering Policy ADD

Posted by Jennifer Passmore on 5/27/2021

At the May 24th meeting of the Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees, revised Board Policy ADD: Face Coverings was on the agenda for second reading having passed the first reading at the May 10th meeting. The original Policy ADD was adopted by the School Board in August 2020. The major revision of this policy is an update to the use of face coverings connected to student outdoor activities.

In accordance with the Governor McMaster’s Executive Order 2021-23 issued on May 11th, the school district immediately implemented the mandated directive to allow the parent/guardian of a student to complete a consent waiver (standardized form created and distributed by DHEC) to opt out of any face covering requirement imposed by school districts. This directive to offer opt out waivers for wearing of face coverings does not apply to adults in schools. In addition, it does not apply to the wearing of face coverings on school buses as that is a federal directive.

At this meeting, the School Board determined that at this time it was in the best interest of students and school operations to refer the revised Policy ADD back to the Board Policy Committee for a thorough review for future circumstances. Therefore, the current Policy ADD would be in effect as adopted in August 2020 for those students whose families have not completed the waiver to opt out of face covering requirements.
