After graduating from College of Charleston in 2004, Lara Hayes joined the Dorchester School District Two family where she taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Knightsville Elementary School. While teaching at KES, she earned her master’s degree, received Teacher of the Year, and Rotary Teacher of the Month twice. In 2012, she jumped out of her comfort zone and ventured into the middle school world to serve as the instructional technology specialist (ITS) at Alston Middle School. As an ITS, she assisted in writing the first computer science standards for the state of SC and integrated technology into lesson plans. She was also named a Siemens STEM Fellow in 2014, received Teacher of the Year during the 2016-2017 school year, and Lowcountry STEM Collaborative Educator in 2018. In 2020, she joined the district office team as a modern learning specialist and received her Master's +30 through The Citadel. She is excited to come back to her Alston Middle School family for the 2022-2023 school year as the 6th grade administrator.
When she’s not at AMS, she enjoys baking with her daughter, watching the Sandlot with her son, and taking vacations with her husband. She is also known to have too much coffee and eat an extremely large amount of sushi.
