The South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC) requires that all 7th grade students must show proof of having received one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine prior to the first day of school for 2020-2021 school year. The Tdap immunization protects students from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. This vaccine is routinely recommended to be given at 11-12 years of age; however, a dose received on or after the 7th birthday will meet this requirement. To meet this requirement, an immunization form (DHEC 2740) must be provided to the school showing the date your child received the vaccine in order to avoid unwanted suspension from school. South Carolina law requires Dorchester School District 2 to adhere to the rule “NO SHOTS-NO SCHOOL.” The only exceptions are a valid Religious Exemption obtained from the Health Department or a Medical Exemption obtained from your child’s healthcare provider.
Please contact your healthcare provider or local health department to schedule an appointment before the beginning of the next school year. Plan ahead and make your appointment now because healthcare providers are busy in the summer.
If your child has already received the Tdap immunization, please send the updated DHEC 2740 immunization form to the ROMS School Nurse.
