Samantha Hoffman Named Dorchester School District Two Teacher of the Year
Alston Middle School teacher Samantha Hoffman was named Dorchester School District Two 2021 Teacher of the Year on Tuesday evening, May 25th at Summers Corner Performing Arts Center during a district wide celebration of Teachers of the Year from all twenty-five district schools. Samantha teaches 8th grade English/Language Arts and has been involved with technology initiatives at Alston Middle School. She is very involved with the Teacher Cadet program at Summerville High School, and also has served as a mentor to new teachers as a part of the district’s mentor/mentee program. She feels there is no greater way to give back to the community than to foster a love of teaching in young people to become future educators.
Samantha taught at Summerville High School for six years before joining the faculty at Alston Middle School in 2019. A love of literature and books ignited a desire for Samantha that led her to be an educator. Teaching provided the opportunity to help young people experience literature in meaningful and impactful ways exposing them to perspectives that only books can provide. In her English/Language Arts classroom at Alston Middle, Samantha designs curriculum that helps her make connections with students. She sees the best in each of her students even when they cannot see it themselves. Her teaching philosophy is based on her belief that literature is the world’s greatest tool to help her students build empathy for others and be good people. She is very involved in her school community and works hard to support her students inside and outside the classroom.
She is a graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education in English. Samantha has earned a Master of Education in Administration & Supervision from Southern Wesleyan University. She also is working on certification in English as a Second Language Certification at University of SC at Aiken and Certification in Instructional Technology from Coastal Carolina University.
Samantha was named from among five honor teachers selected by a committee of community members and educators this spring. The other Honor Teachers are Ann Bennett, 6th grade English/Language Arts teacher at Rollings Middle School of the Arts; Allison Bond, Special Education teacher at Fort Dorchester Elementary; Madison Jones, 7th grade English/Language Arts teacher at River Oaks Middle; and Julie Weber, Speech teacher at Newington Elementary.
